Healthy Cat Treats – How To Make Them

Land of Meow - Cat being fed

Making healthy treats for your cat can be a fun way to show love and affection, but how can you be sure what treats really are the best for your kitty.

The internet is full of recipes from a variety of sources but some of them, whilst healthy for your own plate, are not always as healthy for your cat.

In the wild, cats absorb the essential amino acids they need from the tissue of prey animals. One of the most important of these is Taurine, an essential ingredient for all cats. Without enough Taurine in their diet, cats suffer from a range of issues such as central retinal degeneration, reproductive failure and impaired fetal development. The clinical signs of Taurine deficiency can take months or even years to become apparent, by which stage irreversible damage has been done. Because of the need for Taurine in their diet, among other required nutrients, cats are described as obligate carnivores. This means that they are obligated to eat meat in order to live a healthy life.

Cats are not the only strict meat eaters on the planet. Other animals that need to eat meat are mink, tarsiers, dolphins, seals, sea lions and walruses, just to name a few. The difference for humans is that not many of us keep sea lions and walruses as pets, so making up tasty treats using prey animals is not something that we normally have to contend with. There is also the additional facet that many humans are now choosing to become vegetarians and vegans, and the need to include prey animals in their cat’s diet poses an ethical struggle for them. So, what is the best way to create healthy treats for your cat without having to set traps in the backyard?

Quality cat food is a complicated formula of ingredients and nutrients with synthetic Taurine added to the product to ensure your cat gets all the nutrients it needs, and this pre-made food is easy to turn into tasty little treats.
